BURTON MAIL REPORT  -EAST STAFFS OLYMPIC GYMNASTICS CLUB

September began, as usual, with the Club Competition: the 28th competition in the history of the Club.

At the youngest level for girls under 8, Laura Humphreys worked Bars and Floor and won both, followed by Sophie Hanson and Chloe Knight: three very promising gymnasts who will go on to Regional competitions next year.

The Level 5 girls worked all 4 pieces and finished with a tie for first place between Elise Tunstall and Sophie Grew. Third place went to Kari Lyndsey-Smith and all three girls will be competing in 3 weeks time in the West Midlands Regional Finals.

Level 4 & 3 was won by Alice Todd, closely followed by Meisha Guest.  Meisha has qualified to represent the West Midlands in the National Finals in 2 weeks time in Guildford, along with her team mate Rhyannon Jones who, unfortunately, was injured at the time of the Club competition..

In the Level 2 and FIG level, 1st place went to Tamsin Chadwick with Ellie Fletcher in 2nd place and Bethany O’Toole in 3rd.

The Team Apparatus competition was next on the agenda at WorcesterUniversity, in which we took silver medal at Level 4 for girls under 10. The team consisted of Jessica Gilbert, Megan Wright and Meisha Guest.

In October came the Regional Championships at all Levels, held for the first time at the new Alexander Stadium in Birmingham.    Rhyannon Jones took the Level 4 by over 3 whole marks: an excellent result.Meisha Guest was narrowly beaten into 3rd place and        took the bronze medal.       We wish the girls luck in their National Finals at Guildford.

In the Level 4 for older girls, Alice Todd again took the Gold medal with a convincing win.

Charlotte Davis represented the club at Level 3 for older girls and was thrilled with a Bronze medal.

At the top level, Tamsin Chadwick represented the club in the Junior FIG competition, where she came 2nd

and Ellie Fletcher was in the Espoire FIG and took a well deserved Gold.

These are excellent results and prove that the club continues to be one of the very best in the West Midlands.

REPORT FROM EAST STAFFS GYM CLUB

Last month, the West Midlands Regional Gymnastics Grades Competitions were held at Birmingham Sports Centre.

Ellie Fletcher (11)  from East Staffs Gym Club won her Grade and qualified for the National Finals, which  were held last weekend at Cocks Moor Wood.

Ellie was drawn in the 1st Round and was very excited to be competing against the top girls in her Grade from all of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

She has been training since she was 6 years old and has gathered a collection of medals and trophies, but this was her hardest competition to date.

She began the competition on the Floor with a very good routine, which was highly praised by one of the International judges, scoring the top mark. This says a great deal for Ellie and her coach, Debbie Prince, as the Club do not have a full Floor area in which to practise.

She then moved to the Vault, where despite a small step on landing, she scored a very reasonable mark.

Bars followed and the mark was somewhat disappointing as the routine was clean and showed good amplitude.

Then came the Beam: the piece dreaded by most gymnasts. Ellie was very nervous and had 2 slight wobbles but she held it together and finished with no falls.

At the end of Round 1, Ellie was in 1st position by 0.1 of a mark, but she and her supporters had to sit through two more nerve raking Rounds, to see if anyone would beat her mark.

Thankfully no one scored more and Ellie was delighted to be crowned British Champion at Grade 3 Level.

Well done Ellie and her coaches.  She now looks forward to her next National competition in June, where she will be against the top girls of her age, from all over Britain.
